After a Saturday spent in the comfortable surroundings of Crouchley Lane, Lymm’s First XV are back on the road this weekend as they undertake another mammoth journey to Cornwall, this time to take on League ante-post favourites, Camborne – another first encounter, in a season that will offer up many new experiences.

Camborne are another long established club (founded in 1878!) built on the proud traditions of Cornish rugby – as they say on their website “The Cherry and Whites are known for our fierce spirit on the pitch and our warm, welcoming atmosphere off it.” – sounds like our sort of club!

Camborne were promoted to National 2 at the end of the 22/23 season – a year ahead of our own promotion. Since then, they appear to have made no secret of their ambition to win promotion to a higher league. Last season, having led the league for a long period, Camborne was pipped at the post by Clifton. Having put that disappointment behind them, they have regrouped, recruited well and, 4 matches in to the season, are sitting on top of the league with an unblemished record, despite 3 of those matches being “on the road”.

Whilst recognising that Saturday’s match will be real test, Lymm’s squad will travel in a positive frame of mind following their clinical attacking display in last Saturday’s win against Loughborough Students. With a number of enforced absences due to injury or unavailability, there are 6 changes to Lymm’s squad with those drafted in being a mix of new, young players and older, more experienced returnees.

The team should see some familiar faces in the crowd from travelling supporters, albeit one who won’t be there is Paul Foulkes who decided against a reprise of his Lymm to Redruth bike ride!!! Hats off to Floss for raising (at present, there is still time to donate!) more that £13,700, including Gift Aid!!

At the time of writing, the prospect of a welcome from Storm Amy appears likely. Let’s hope that the 50+ mph westerly winds that are forecast to blow the length of the pitch don’t ruin the match!!

For those not wishing to travel so far, there are 2 fixtures at home:

Lymm 2nd XV v Stockport KO 3pm

Lymm Eagles v Manchester Medics KO 3pm

National League Rugby Returns
