On Saturday, Lymm travel once more to the West Country, this time to play Taunton Titans in what will be their final overnight stay of the season. Taunton are another club in National 2 West boasting a rich history, having been founded over 150 years ago in 1875.

Less than 2 months ago, the Titans’ home, which is nestled close to Junction 25 of the M5, was completely submerged and the clubhouse badly damaged as severe flooding hit Taunton, when local streams and rivers burst their banks. To their huge credit, the club’s army of volunteers sprang to action to contain the damage and organised a hugely successful the crowdfunding appeal which raised over £31,000 to repair the flood damage, replace lost essential equipment and stock, return the club to full operation as soon as possible and compensate for lost income. A tremendous effort which should be applauded the length of the country.

In the reverse fixture back in November, which was the first ever meeting between the two clubs, Lymm came out on top 39-33 in a hugely entertaining and competitive match.  As well as the 11 tries that were scored that afternoon, the match will be remembered for the audacious drop goal that Cal Morris put over early in the second half.  Despite the loss, Taunton were able to head back down the M5 with two league bonus points, sealed with a try from the final play of the match.

Since then, Taunton have been in fine form, winning 8 and losing only 3 matches including their recent success at Camborne, pulling off a remarkable “double” over the league leaders who have only lost one other match this season so far.  Lymm’s form on the other hand has been like the proverbial curate’s egg….good in parts.

Whilst Taunton’s win/loss record to date of 12/10 is not too dissimilar to Lymm’s 10/12, they currently sit on 72 points in 4th place to Lymm’s 9th place on 56 points.  This difference in league positions reflecting, at least in part, the tightness of the table in National 2 West and the disparity in bonus points between the two sides – with Taunton’s tally of 24 being 50% higher than Lymm’s 16.  With only 4 league matches left in the season, Lymm are presently 10 points clear of the relegation zone and every point from here will be important for Lymm to ensure that they make safe their National 2 status for next season.

The notable feature of Lymm’s squad for the match is that it will be Paddy Jennings 100th appearance in a Lymm First XV shirt.  Paddy, who played through all Lymm’s Mini & Junior age groups, made his First XV debut at the start of the 21/22 season since when he has scored 55 tries in his 99 appearances to date. Impressively, Paddy has appeared in all but one of Lymm’s 74 matches played at National 2 Level over the past 3 seasons, scoring 37 tries in the process.  Many congratulations Paddy!
