President’s Welcome

Dear Members, Guests, Sponsors and Friends of Lymm Rugby Club,

This weekend we enter round 17 of the 2025/26 season and with 16 games played so far, we are in 8th place, with 32 points from 8 wins plus 12 bonus points, and still with the desire and opportunity to improve this position in the second half of the season.

Round 16 of the league timetable saw our 1st Team play away last weekend against Loughborough Students. Earlier in the season we took the honours in our first encounter at Beechwood in what was a very well contested match, but with a final scoreline that didn’t reflect the underlying strengths of this Student team.

The old adage, it was a game of two halves, was never truer than when applied to the return match on the Loughborough campus last Saturday. In the first half, we were in danger of being completely swamped, and staring at a record defeat. The students worked their magic and a half-time score of 33 – 0 didn’t really flatter the hosts.

The travelling Lymm support wasn’t looking forward to the second half, however, we showed great character, and at least made the scoreline somewhat respectable, scoring 4 tries to earn a bonus point and win the second half, 24 – 5.  The shortcomings of the first half were turned around, but in the end we had given ourselves too much to do and Loughborough came out on top with a deserved victory at 38 – 24.

A full match report by Andy Leach can be read on the club website via the following link;

Loughborough 28 – 24 Lymm

Lymm’s other senior sides fared rather better. Lymm 2s defeated Wirral 2s, 48 – 33 and Lymm 3s gained revenge for their earlier season defeat by beating Winnington Park 2s, 39 – 19.

A report of this game can be read on the club website via the following link;

“Welcome to Camborne RFC” – This Saturday, we welcome top of the table Camborne to Beechwood for their first ever visit. This will be a great test for both sides and a game that could be decided in the final few minutes.  Lymm have earned a reputation for downing the top sides at Beechwood, following successes against Leeds and Sheffield last season, and will be looking to repeat this against the team from Cornwall, who have only lost one game this season.

Hopefully Lymm can start better than they did last Saturday and get into their stride early to make things difficult for Camborne from the first whistle.  For Lymm, this is one of the biggest games of the season, and we look forward to a large home crowd to  cheer the team on.

Please note kick-off is 2pm

Lymm 2s are away at Stockport 2s. Lymm 3s have no game.

“National League 2 Structure Review” – The RFU has held a further meeting with National League clubs to consider 3 options for the structure of the National League 2 for next season. This has been brought about by the disproportionate travel incurred by clubs in National 2 West which includes – as with today’s fixture – clubs from as far afield as Cornwall and Cheshire.

The options presented were:

  1. ‘The Swiss Model’ – which is similar to the current UEFA Champions League format. Each club will play 13 clubs – home and away – that are relatively close to them geographically.  The league points collected are used to place each club in one league table of 42 teams. At the end of the season there will be play-off fixtures for promotion to National 1 and relegation to the Regional Leagues.
  2. 4 Regional Divisions – North, Midlands, South West and South East – with 10 teams in the each of the North, Midlands and South West and 12 clubs in the South East . Clubs play each club in their Division 2 or 3 times to fulfil 26 fixtures.  Promotion and relegation are again decided by play offs.  If this was the format for this season, Lymm would be in the Midlands division.
  3. The Status Quo – North, East and West Leagues each of 14 teams.  There was support from a number of North region clubs to extend the current North league to 16 teams to allow the Cheshire clubs back into the North. It is possible this could be a fourth option for consideration.

Hopefully we will get some news soon as to which way this is going to go.

Ladies Lunch – a message from Colette and Aimee

Women make up 32% of our membership, across Rugby, Tennis and Squash and yet are often unrepresented within the club. So, we thought it was time to rectify that, and we are delighted to invite you to something a little special 💛

Ahead of our 1st XV home game on Friday 21st February, we’re hosting a Ladies Pre-Match Lunch – a chance to come together, celebrate women in sport, and enjoy a brilliant afternoon at the club. This lunch is all about bringing more women into our Club community, shining a light on the importance of girls’ and women’s sport locally, and showing our support for our teams – whether you’re a mum, auntie, sister, player, or supporter from rugby, squash, tennis, touch rugby (or all of the above!).

Expect drinks on arrival, a delicious two-course lunch and table favours, followed by the match and a little music and dancing afterwards to round off the day.

We’d love you to join us, bring friends, and be part of a fantastic afternoon celebrating women, sport, and our club.

If you would like to join the fun please contact either Aimee via email at aimeecartwright1998@gmail.com or Colette via her mobile phone on 07596 938839

I hope we have a large and vocal crowd  at Beechwood on Saturday and have the opportunity to see some fantastic rugby. Please do come and enjoy the atmosphere and hospitality at Beechwood!

Best Regards

John Cartwright (JC), President
