President’s Welcome

Dear Members, Guests, Sponsors and Friends of Lymm Rugby Club,

What a fantastic day Friday 14th November 2025 was, not only was it King Charles’ 77th birthday, but by now I am sure you will be aware that it was also the day that our fabulous club was awarded the “King’s Award for Voluntary Service”

The Kings Award for Voluntary Service or KAVS as it is known, is the highest award that a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is seen as equivalent to an MBE at an organisation level. Lymm RFC is one of only 231 charities, social enterprises, and voluntary groups throughout the UK to receive this prestigious award this year.

Volunteering is embedded in our clubs DNA and has grown and developed throughout the club from its very beginning in 1960. The original group of young men who created Lymm Rugby Club saw the game of Rugby as a potential platform for creating a “drinking club” for their own purposes, where the quality of the beer they were drinking was determined by themselves. It didn’t take long for 20 local gentlemen to express an interest in this venture and on 14th January 1960 they laid the foundations of what is today Lymm Rugby Club.

Little did they know what they had created!!

One thing that has endured since 1960 is the positive impact that volunteering has on our club. Volunteering has created an environment where our members actively engage in worthwhile activities for the benefit of the club and its members. Volunteering has provides an effective vehicle for change and the foundation for our future sustainability.  Volunteering at Lymm Rugby Club is driven by members from all sections and each and every one of those members and their families volunteer their time, skills and commitment for the benefit of our club and our local community.

Our KAVS award in 2025 reflects the hard work put in by our member volunteers since 1960. This isn’t just a reflection and reward for the commitment of our current member volunteers but reflects the commitment of our past member volunteers; those who created Lymm Rugby Club in 1960 and those who nurtured its growth over the past 65 years. Multiple generations of families are evident as part of our volunteer group across this period and members of these families are still active member volunteers at the club today. Long may this last!

To be considered for this award, a number of current volunteers came together to present our case to the adjudicators of the KAVs committee, by personally explaining how they volunteer for the club and why. I was proud to be a part of that meeting  and so proud to hear why our members are moved to volunteer for the club.

All sections of the club were represented at the meeting, and this included members from Lymm Rugby, at all levels, Lymm Squash, Manor Road Tennis and Lymm Hockey, plus volunteers from all the essential activities that cut across the club, e.g. Panto, Summer Marquee Events, Executive Management, Grounds Maintenance etc etc. All ages and genders were represented at the meeting, and each had the opportunity to express their personal reasons for being an active volunteer of the club. It was very evident from their reaction, that these individual presentations had a very positive impact on the adjudicators that were present.

I would like to express my personal thanks to all member volunteers, past, present, and future, for their unstinting commitment to ensure Lymm Rugby Club can create a sustainable future. A future that benefits all aspects and elements of our community through the playing of sport.

This weekend we enter round 11 of the 2025/26 season and with 10 games played so far, we are in 5th place, with 30 points from 6 wins plus 6 bonus points.

Round 10 of the National 2 West league timetable saw our first team play away against Hornets of Weston-Super-Mare. Although we haven’t previously played Hornets at league level rugby, we did meet in a pre-season encounter in 2024. This was on a neutral ground rather than Hornets home ground, “The Nest”.
A difficult 15-minute spell for Lymm after the interval shifted the balance of this game in favour of our west country hosts and the game was lost 27-19.

A full match report by Andy Leach can be read on the club website via the following link;

Hornets 27 -19 Lymm

Our second team had a tough game at home to Preston Grasshoppers, which saw a 29-12 lead at half time turn into a 29-43 loss at the close.

Welcome to Taunton Titans – This weekend we welcome Taunton Titans to Beechwood for another ‘first encounter’ with a team in the West league. Taunton travel to Beechwood, one of their longest away journeys, following a 1point win last weekend against the unbeaten league leaders Camborne. This win will give them renewed confidence but our 1’s will be up for the challenge and keen to put last week’s disappointment behind them. I expect it will be a keenly fought encounter.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend this week’s match in person but I have secured the services of past President Tony Wright, to welcome Neil Symons, Taunton’s President, and his fellow Titans supporters to Beechwood. We do hope you enjoy your time at Beechwood.

National League Fixtures and Results; Don’t forget, you can follow the National League Rugby structure, the teams that are involved at each level and details of the games at each round, via the following link.  The site now has the facility for Live Scores on match days so you can keep right up to date:

Our 1st XV fixtures, results and league position can be found via the following link;

I hope we have a large and vocal crowd  at Beechwood on Saturday and have the opportunity to see some fantastic rugby. Please do come and enjoy the atmosphere and hospitality at Beechwood!

Best Regards

John Cartwright (JC), President
