What a week this is proving to be for Lymm RFC!
On Saturday 3rd May at 3:00, Cal Morris, the current Lymm scrum-half, took the field for the Barbarians in their fixture against Durham University, as part of university’s 150-year celebrations. Whilst a few former Lymm boys (Dave Strettle, Ross Harrison, Alex Mitchell) have played for an England XV against the Barbarians, Cal is the first Lymm player to have pulled on the famous black and white hooped shirt.
Later that day, Lymm old boy, Alex Mitchell, helped guide underdogs Northampton Saints to an outstanding victory against a much-fancied Leinster outfit in the semi-final of the European Champions. The final against Bordeaux Bègles on 24 May now beckons for Alex.
The following day Lymm U14s were successful in their Cheshire Cup Final, coming out on top in a close encounter with Bowdon, whist the U15s were highly credible runners-up in their final against Macclesfield.
Then, the icing on the cake, was yesterday’s announcement of the British & Irish Lions 38-man squad to travel “down under” this summer, which included the name of Alex Mitchell – Lymm’s first ever Lion! Having played at Lymm from the age of 6 to 18 (more years than he has been at Northampton!) his progress through the tour will be watched by everyone who has ever associated with our club with great pride – he will also have support on the ground through a travelling contingent of Lymm folk. Well done Alex, your selection is fully merited and deserved.
Finally, this Saturday (10th May) Cal will once again pull on the Barbarians shirt as they take on Glasgow Academicals.
Wow!
