Manchester Referees Society are proud to be hosting a special charity rugby match against Looseheadz, rugby’s leading mental health charity, at Lymm Rugby Club on the 28th December. This event is about far more than the result on the pitch – it’s about bringing people together, starting conversations, and raising vital funds and awareness for mental health within the rugby community and beyond.

Looseheadz is a charity dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing in rugby and wider society. Founded by players who recognised the pressures that come with the sport, Looseheadz works to break down stigma, encourage openness, and ensure that no one feels alone when struggling. Through education, community projects, partnerships with clubs and players, and open conversations, Looseheadz promotes the simple but powerful message that it’s okay not to be okay.

The Manchester Referees Society (MADREFS) represents match officials from across Greater Manchester and surrounding areas. Beyond supporting referees on and off the field, the society is committed to creating a strong, inclusive community that looks after the wellbeing of its members. This match reflects those values, showing that referees are not just officials, but active participants in supporting the rugby family and important causes like mental health awareness.

The day will be a celebration of rugby’s ability to unite people – players, referees, volunteers, supporters and charities – all pulling together for a shared purpose. Alongside the match itself, fundraising activities will help generate donations for Looseheadz, ensuring their work can continue to support those who need it most.

By coming together for this event, Manchester Referees Society and Looseheadz aim to shine a light on mental health, strengthen community bonds, and prove that rugby can be a powerful force for good both on and off the pitch.
