Lymm Senior Colts 38 – 17 Newport Senior Colts
Senior Colts Match Report | Sunday September 7 2025
Following the full house of wins for the senior teams of Lymm on the opening Saturday of the season, it was the turn of the senior colts on Sunday playing their first game of the season v Newport Sallop at home in the NW Colts A league.
It was the first time we had played one another at this age group and so it was good to welcome Newport to Crouchley Lane.
After fine weather on Saturday, on Sunday things changed and both teams warmed up in driving rain. The rugby season had definitely started. By kick off however the rain had slowed significantly yet the ball remained slippery at best !
Newport kicked off to Lymm and the game was under way.
Newport were keen to move the ball around despite the conditions but Lymm’s defence was strong from the outset and pressured the visitors iwho gamely continued to attack when opportunities arose.
Lymms patient attacks however finally converted pressure into points with four tries scored in the first half from a good mix of forward power and great finishing out wide. Two of the tries were converted despite the conditions.
Newport weren’t taking it lying down however and they hit back with an unconverted try of their own just before half time.
Lymm made 7 changes at half time and Newport made their own changes too. Lymm took longer to adapt to the changes in personnel than Newport however who scored a 2nd converted try soon after the break to make it 24-12.
Lymm responded well however and after some patient phases of pressure within Newport’s 22 got over for a further converted try.
After some further back and forth, a bizarre bounce of the ball off a Lymm prop’s boot at a scrum led to Newport being presented with an unexpected attacking opportunity. The ball was shipped quickly down the blind side and Newport managed to score another try near the corner flag. A difficult kick was duly converted and the gap closed again to 14 points.
With 5 minutes to go Lymm continued to exert pressure on the Newport defences and after several held up attempts to get over the line, Lymm broke through and scored what proved to be final score of the game which was duly converted.
Final score: Lymm 38 – 17 Newport
That’s the first game of the season out of the way, now on to the next fixture away next week to local neighbours Stockport in another NW Colts A league encounter.
