Lymm 2s Disappoint at Wirral

Lymm travelled to Wirral with high hopes but endured a bad day at the office as Wirral adapted to the conditions better than Lymm. Lymm lost debutant Fin Williams to a hamstring injury in the warm up and had to shuffle the pack.

Lymm kicked off with wind behind them and were immediately on the attack, with Ryan Brown returning a kick deep into the Wirral twenty two and quick ball resulted in Joe Dowdeswell sprinting over for an unconverted try, 0-5. Wirral responded by playing sensible driving rugby and eventually scored a converted try from a maul close to Lymm line, 7-5. At this stage Lymm were trying to move the ball but were making errors, however it was from a dropped pass by Wirral that quick hands released Alfie Simpson from 40 metres who used his pace to score in the corner, 7-10. Wirral then reverted to type and kept driving the ball up the field aided by penalties and indiscipline from Lymm. They scored two more converted tries from line outs close the Lymm line.

Half time 21-10

Captain Tom Baker reiterated at half time that we had to compete better in the forwards and increase the pace of the game. This seemed to work as Nick Ashton crashed over for an unconverted try, 21-15. This didn’t last for long as poor Lymm handling and kicking left Wirral camped in Lymm’s half and they managed to score two more converted tries.

There were some good individual performances from Joe Dowdeswell and Alfie Simpson but overall Wirral played the conditions better and deserved there victory. A disappointing display from Lymm who lost their fourth game of the season and are now in 4th place in the League. They will need their strongest squad available next week when they host 2nd placed Chester 2nd XV.
