Lymm RFC v Devonport Services – Saturday 19th September 2026
Author: John Case

President’s Welcome
Dear Members, Guests, Sponsors and Friends of Lymm Rugby Club,
Welcome to Devonport Services – This weekend we welcome Devonport Services to Beechwood for their first ever visit. Having been promoted to National 2 West at the end of last season, they have so far played 2 of the strongest teams in the league and currently lie 14th.
Unfortunately, I am unable to attend this week’s match in person, but I have secured the services of past President Varun Maharaj, to welcome Mac Bayliss, Devonport’s Treasurer, and the Devonport team and supporters to Beechwood. We do hope you enjoy your time at Beechwood.
Please note that the KO time is 3:00pm
As we approach Round 3, we are in 5th place in National 2 West with 7 points; 5 of them secured in a home win against Loughborough Students in Round 1 and 2 bonus points secured in Round 2 away against Bournville.
Lymm v Loughborough Students – Our first match of the season was always expected to be a tough encounter with Loughborough Students. The retirement of players at the end of last season and a very long list of players recovering from injuries, plus the expectation that Loughborough would field their strongest side including their 1st XV BUCS players, suggested it would be a tough day at Beechwood.
As expected, the game was very competitive from the start and mirrored our first encounter with Loughborough in the 2025/26 season. Both sides played open attacking rugby and by half time there was only 1 point in it, with Loughborough leading. In the second half we saw more attacking rugby from both sides with 7 tries scored, 5 by Lymm and 2 by Loughborough. However, it was during the final quarter of the game that Lymm stepped up the pace and scored 3 excellent tries winning the match by 50 – 27.
A full match report (well almost) by Dave Fernyhough can be read on the club website via the following link; Lymm RFC v Loughborough Students – Saturday 5th September 2026 | Lymm RFC
Lymm v Bournville – Our trip to Bournville in Round 2 was not the first in our recent history, but it was our first visit to their new ground at Avery Fields. We had previously played Bournville twice in the 2013/14 season when Lymm were transferred to the Midlands League. At that time Bournville were based at the University of Birmingham and having beaten Bournville 23-20 at Beechwood we achieved a 16-16 draw away.
Bournville came to Saturday’s game with all gun’s blazing, following a 61-10 defeat away at Redruth in Round 1. Their determination for a home win was very evident from the outset as they ran in 3 converted tries and a penalty without reply. Following a slow start and a below par performance in the set piece, we stepped up our response in the latter stages of the half with 2 converted tries giving a half time score of 24-14 and hope that we could win the game. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case and Bournville took the honours with a 43-38 win. Following a very late penalty and 5 tries, our consolation on the day was 2 league bonus points.

Taunton Titans v Lymm – Live Stream – The 1st team away fixture at Taunton on 10th October will be streamed live to our Clubhouse. This is something we did a few times last season and was very popular with those who were able to attend. With the long distances between clubs in this league it gives members the opportunity to watch away fixtures that they would otherwise miss. Kick Off will be 3 o’clock and the bar will be open for food and drink so why not come down to Beechwood, enjoy the atmosphere and watch the boys.
Going forward, the RFU are looking to conclude an agreement with Clubber, a video streaming company who live stream games in the Rugby Championship, to expand their offering into the National Leagues. This means that if there is sufficient support from club members more opportunities may arise to show 1st team away fixtures live in the Clubhouse.
Car Parking – As you will already be aware, the planned housing development at Beechwood has started and as expected, does have an impact on access to parking. We expect this will be an issue during the house building but as the ground works progress we hope to implement plans for some further parking on site. In the meantime, I would ask for your full support in making parking easy and safe.
Please lower your speed whilst in the carpark, park sensibly, follow the signage and remember that pedestrians have priority! If you can avoid bringing your car at all then please consider this.
I hope we have a large and vocal crowd at Beechwood on Saturday with the opportunity to see some fantastic rugby. Please do come and enjoy the atmosphere and hospitality at Beechwood!
Best Regards
