2nd Team Match Report | Saturday September 7 2019
After a great pre-season for the majority of the team, a strong Lymm team travelled to play Blackburn 2nd XV.
Lymm got off to a good start, despite Coach Pete Millachip’s efforts (arriving 30 minutes late for his own meet-time) and a late cry off from Kieran Soni who had overslept! Playing the same expansive shape that the 1XV have become known, Lymm scored two good tries through the tireless Matty Connelly and Olly Thornton.
The first came after flowing link up play from all three front rowers and a great step from young tight head Harry Ratcliffe. Lymm dominated possession throughout the first half but skills and execution let them down slightly to go in 0 – 10 at the break.
Blackburn must have received a rocket at half time and came out with some strong running from their forwards. A few weak tackles allowed them field position and they scored to take the score to 7 – 10.
Lymm replied after a lovely grubber through from fly half maverick, Rhys Jones, to Josh Davies who finished nicely 7 – 17. But Blackburn replied after some strong running to set up a grandstand finish, 14 – 17.
With two minutes to go Lymm were defending strongly deep in the Blackburn half before their second row cut through the defence with a great line and finished off with a try under the sticks leaving Lymm wondering how they had managed to let the match slip, 21 – 17.
But all was not lost.
Kicking off with 50 seconds left, Lymm forced a knock on. A strong scrum was followed by a great run from centre Paddy Jennings who was brought down inches from the line. The move was then finished off with a miracle ball by Reece ‘Sonny Bill’ Forrest, who found Tom Oliver to go over for the match winning try. Reece denies rumours that his eyes were closed when he threw the pass, 21 – 24.
It was a good start to the season from Lymm and showed great fighting spirit to win the game at the death. The front row all stood up well with James Mawdsley carrying impressively after almost a year out injured and Harry Ratcliffe making his first start at prop in senior rugby.
Matty Connelly shook off a month of eating and drinking to lead the lineout intelligently and make some big hits around the fringes.
Also a special mention for Luke Richards and Bob ‘Moose’ Makin who both put in great shifts despite being out of position at 9 and 7. Bob in particular showing great hands in the wide channels. Something had clearly given him a new lease of life this week.
