AN Oldpfartt

Author: Lionel Cockayne

Reading Adam Fletcher’s excellent piece, brought back many memories of Teams and Players past. Adam has done a wonderful job developing an enlarged squad, equally at home in the first or second team on playing days. There is parity in the way the teams play and the 2’s results in the Cotton Traders Premiership, which must have come as a surprise to the likes of Caldy, Fylde, Sedgley Park and Chester etc. This is a great testament to our coaches and playing squad.
I’ve seen some excellent Lymm teams over the years including the squad we have today. At RFU Level 5, we are punching well above our weight as a strictly amateur, village club. Semi-Professional, rugby has had an impact at our level, with many of the teams paying players. We can be quite proud of the fact that on average, 14 or 15 of our match day squads are the products of our M&J’s/Colts section. The others are quality players who have moved into the area.
Over the last 15 years or so, a number of our younger players have decided to pursue a full-time professional career. Add David Strettle (only recently retired), Ross Harrison, James and Alex Mitchell to the current squad playing on our AGP. Plus some quality ‘large fellows’ from the past like Alan Scott, Alex Bennett and not forgetting Tony Wright and Peter Millachip — one could only dream ———————-
