Lymm made a number of changes from last week’s excellent win against Chester in this top of the table clash with Caldy. The pitch was immaculate as usual but there was a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch.

Caldy kicked off with the wind at their backs and immediately were on the attack. However determined Lymm defence kept them out. Lymm were having difficulties clearing their lines with kicks and chose to run the ball with some success. Matty Hands and Henry Baldwin led the charge with bullocking runs but Caldy used the wind to kick Lymm back into their half. Eventually the pressure told and a chip ahead led to the first converted try.

Caldy then attacked again and a missed tackle in midfield resulted in another converted try. At this stage Lymm lost debutant Jack Bond in what looked like a serious leg injury. However Lymm were not daunted and after a good break by Josh Hadland, Lymm managed to exert pressure on the Caldy line and after a series of drives, Tom Baker forced his way over for an unconverted try. The rest of the half Lymm defended well and ran the ball out defence well but Caldy still managed to score another converted try.

Lymm started the second half and put Caldy under pressure. They were penalised as Lymm started to get the upper hand. This pressure led to a converted try by Josh Hadland, who jinked his way over with Rhys Jones adding the points, 21 – 12. Lymm went straight back on the attack and Caldy were having difficulty exiting their 22 and after a fine run by josh Hadland, Lymm had a scrum 15 meters out. Cash Chilvers picked up from number 8 and a slick pass released Tom Baker for his second try which Rhys Jones converted, 21-19 and all to play for. However some power defence allowed Caldy to increase their lead, although Rhys Jones did kick a penalty. Lymm continued to press but could not break the line and Caldy scored two more tries from distance to complete the scoring.

The score didn’t give true indication of the effort and closeness of the game. Caldy are a good side who took their chances better than Lymm. However, Lymm should take heart from their excellent defence and commitment. Everybody tackled to a standstill, with many excellent contributions, notably Matty Hands and Josh Hadland. Henry Baldwin had his best game of the season and his brother Will dominated the line out.

Next week its Fylde at home which is a Cup and League double which again should provide a good test. However if we continue show the performance level of the last few weeks, it’ll be an entertaining game.
